WATER TO FLOW IN KUMASI |

The projects cover parts of the region including Mampong, Obuasi, Agona/Jamasi and Kumasi.
The projects are main pipeline extensions covering an area of 58km and drilling of boreholes at Agona and Kumasi.
The Kumasi metropolis has a population of about 1.8 million people, and demand from small private industries has recently increased, making supply inadequate. Demand for water now is about 30 million gallons per day.
Current installed capacities of Barekese and Owabi Headworks are eighteen million 18 million and three million gallons.
However, due to the age of the pumps and frequent power outages the average supply per day is 15.5 million gallons per day instead of 21 million.
Annual average population growth of three per cent in Ghana compounds the situation. Rationing has therefore been the best means to manage the shortfall.
Additionally, boreholes have been sunk at Buokrom and KNUST where water supply issues are delicate to mitigate the situation.
It is against this background that the people of Kumasi will heave a sigh of relief when works to rehabilitate both Barekese and Owabi Waterworks begin.
The project will add six million gallons to the existing systems at Barekese and Owabi Headworks to their original combined plant capacity. After the project the city's water supply per day will increase to 27 million gallons.
The project will cost 38 million Euros with the Dutch government providing a 50 per cent grant and the Ghana government paying the other half. The project is expected to complete within twenty-four (24) months.
Oseikrom longs to see the commissioning day.
